Build a first business website that helps customers decide

Publish the smallest useful site: who you help, what you offer, why people should trust you and exactly what to do next.

Your first site has one job

It should help the right person understand the offer and take the next step. It does not need ten pages, clever animation or every possible feature. A clear one-page site is better than a polished site that never explains who the business helps.

Put these answers on the page

  • Who is this for?
  • What problem do you solve or outcome do you provide?
  • What exactly can somebody buy, book or ask about?
  • Why should they trust the business? Use specific evidence, not vague claims.
  • Where do you work and how quickly do you respond?
  • What should the visitor do next?

Show the correct legal or trading identity and contact details. If you display prices, explain what is included. If customers order online, check the information, cancellation, delivery and contract rules that apply before taking payment.

Build the foundation properly

Keep the domain in an account controlled by the business. Use a professional email address, make the site work on a phone, compress images, write meaningful page titles and give every page one clear heading. Make buttons descriptive—“Request a quote” is more useful than “Click here”.

Privacy, cookies and accessibility

List the personal data the site collects through forms, analytics, bookings, chat and payments. Write privacy information for what the business actually does rather than copying another site. Check whether non-essential cookies need consent. Use readable contrast, keyboard-friendly controls, labels and alternative text so more people can use the site.

Before launch

Test every form and link. Submit an enquiry on a phone and confirm it reaches the right inbox. Check the site on a slow connection, proofread contact details, set up backups and decide who will install updates. Connect Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools when ready so technical problems and search visibility can be monitored.

What complete looks like

A real customer can understand the offer, trust the business and contact or buy without guessing. The site owner, domain owner, renewal date, privacy review and next content update are recorded.
