How should a sole trader evidence the business purpose of an expense?

A receipt shows what I bought but not why it related to the business. What extra record is useful?

Add a short contemporaneous note linking the purchase to business activity, project or journey. Keep the original evidence and separate private use; tax treatment still follows current rules and your facts.
